ABOUT

Welcome! My name is Michael Soukup, and I am a communications professional and graphic designer, born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. Over the past eight years, I've had the opportunity to cultivate my writing and design skills, first as Communications Coordinator with the Office of the Governor of Alaska, then as Press Secretary for U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan in Washington, DC, and currently as Director of Design for Arena Online, LLC in Salt Lake City, UT.

I'm grateful for the fulfilling experiences and invaluable relationships I gained working in Alaska, Washington, and Utah.

I invite you to explore my portfolio. For more details on my professional credentials and history, please visit me on LinkedIn. If you are interested in collaborating on a project, or looking for a reliable and detail-oriented young creative who can write, design and problem solve without missing a beat, I am eager to hear from you.

U.S. SENATE PROJECTS

GOVERNOR'S OFFICE PROJECTS

I managed the Senator's social media platforms, drafting content and providing reports and analytics to the Senator and his Chief of Staff. I designed infographics to accompany our posts that helped enhance the reach and engagement of the Senator's pages.

Every October, Alaska's indigenous tribes host the largest gathering of Native peoples in the United States, known as the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention. The event is an opportunity for Alaska's representatives and leaders to engage with an important constituency from all corners of the state, and to hear how the federal government can better serve their needs. I developed a series of printed hand-outs, delivered to approximately 5,000 attendees, detailing the Senator's legislative efforts to advance the interests of Alaska's "first people."

I developed numerous informational graphics for Senator Sullivan's work as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. These graphics were used in hearings on pressing national security matters with the most senior U.S. defense officials, including the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The graphics helped inform conversations in the committee and were featured in leading news outlets.

GRAPHICS

Crossroads of the World

This graphic reinforced the Senator's case that Alaska has a unique role to play in U.S. defense policy due to its proximity to the Far East and Europe via the Arctic region.

Russia's Arctic Build-Up

Over the past few years, Russia has enacted an unprecedented military expansion in the Arctic region. I developed this graphic illustrating the scale of the build-up for hearings in the Armed Services Committee. The graphic was featured in Foreign Policy magazine and on CNN.

Militarization of the South China Sea

China has been constructing military installations on reefs in the South China Sea for several years, a cause of significant concern to nations bordering these heavily trafficked international waters. I developed this graphic for a committee hearing, showing the potential ramifications of China's extraterritorial claims.

South China Sea Reclamation

Building on the previous South China Sea graphic, I sought to show specific military installations being constructed on three crucial reefs in the region. China had previously claimed that its reclamation efforts were not for military purposes.

Alaska: Cornerstone of Missile Defense

With reports of a rapidly evolving threat from North Korea, Senator Sullivan took on a leadership role in advocating for new homeland missile defense investments. I developed this graphic to illustrate the individual components of America's existing missile defense infrastructure. In the event of an intercontinental ballistic missile launch toward the continental U.S., these assets would be employed to track and destroy the missile in space.

I developed video content for the Senator's social media platforms, highlighting his visits to communities and major policy initiatives, as well as special occasions and holidays. My career has required me to be proficient in the use of Final Cut Pro and both the Mac and PC platforms of Adobe Premiere Pro.

the U.S. Capitol.

Frontier in Focus Photo Contest

Created as an invitation for Alaska's many talented amateur photographers to participate in a photo contest and share the beauty of Alaska via the Senator's Facebook page.

As Press Secretary, I was responsible for drafting press releases from the Senator and fielding inquiries from local and national reporters. Tapping into my design skills, I developed custom banners for the Senator's own releases, joint releases with other members of the Senate, and releases by the whole Alaska congressional delegation.

As Communications Coordinator in the Office of the Governor, I was responsible for developing graphics for the Governor's official website, our most visible and trafficked communications platform. Of chief importance was a horizontal scrolling banner touting policy initiatives, special occasions, and the Governor's engagement with Alaskans. Scroll through the graphics below to see a sampling of those that appeared on the Governor's page.

I designed infographics for the Governor's social media platforms aimed at enhancing engagement with constituents and sharing the Governor's priorities. Scroll through the slideshow at the right to see examples of the graphics I produced for the Governor's Facebook page.

I led the design and implementation of a new standard letterhead for all state agencies and departments. I sought to create a fresh and professional standard that would foster a uniform look for the State of Alaska. I was in charge of creating various Microsoft Word templates and files that were ready to be taken to a print shop. I also served as the point person for questions and technical support during the transition.

GOVERNOR OF ALASKA

STATE
STATIONERY

The Governor's press office served as a prime resource for the public relations offices of all state divisions and agencies. To share our catalog of media contacts, I developed a comprehensive media directory for use by all state public information officers (PIOs). I sought to create an intuitive and easily navigable resource to help PIOs with their media contact needs. At the right and below are examples of two editions I produced as well as a sample of the interior page formatting.

GOVERNOR OF ALASKA

MEDIA
DIRECTORY

To keep Alaskans updated on the latest happenings in the state capital, the Office of the Governor maintained email lists for correspondence on specific issues and topics. You can see an assortment of the custom HTML templates I designed for targeted email distributions in the device on the right. I sought to keep the look and feel of our email updates familiar to our specific audiences, ensuring a higher open rate and fewer "opt-outs."

GOVERNOR OF ALASKA

EMAIL
UPDATES

One of the Governor's key initiatives was overhauling the state's oil production tax system. Many experts argued that the existing system was harming investment opportunities and exposing the state to great financial risk at lower oil prices. The Governor initiated the "Fill the Pipeline" campaign to educate the public of the impending threat to  Alaska's main source of income, and his four principles for evaluating any new tax system. To the right and below is a selection of the branding and informational graphics I developed for the Governor's "Fill the Pipeline" campaign. The campaign culminated with the drafting and passage of Senate Bill 21, the More Alaska Production (MAP) Act, in 2013.

GOVERNOR OF ALASKA

In April 2013, an Alaska State Trooper and pilot were killed in a tragic helicopter crash. As the head of the state, including the public safety department, the Governor was called upon to comfort a reeling community and deliver remarks highlighting the selflessness and courage of each brave public servant. I developed memorial booklets to be given to the family members, many of whom traveled great distances for the sad occasion.

TROOPER
MEMORIALS

During his tenure, the Governor embarked on several international trade missions. I created an  informational booklet about Alaska for the Governor and First Lady to distribute to students they met with in several foreign destinations. My aim was to develop a fun and visually compelling booklet to highlight the unique aspects of the Last Frontier. Below are some of the interior pages.

Every January, the Governor delivers his most important speech of the year — the State of the State. The Governor lays out his priorities for the coming legislative session, and his vision for the role of state government in the year ahead. For each speech, I created a commemorative booklet of the Governor's remarks for attendees, legislators, dignitaries, and constituents visiting the office.

GOVERNOR OF ALASKA

STATE OF
THE STATE

In 2014, the Alaska Legislature embarked on the "Education Session," with legislative attention focused on public school funding and innovation. The Governor introduced "Alaska's Education Opportunity Act," a comprehensive package to bolster state education funding, improve results in struggling schools, bring specialized teachers to rural parts of the state via digital teaching technology, and better prepare students for postsecondary opportunities. I designed a number of graphics, hand-outs and mailers — all aimed at keeping Alaskans informed and engaged on the proposals.

GOVERNOR OF ALASKA

EDUCATION
SESSION

Upon taking office, the Governor unveiled the largest  policy focus of his administration, the Choose Respect initiative, which aimed to curb Alaska's devastatingly high rates of domestic violence and sexual assault. I led the branding, graphic design, and multimedia production for this statewide campaign. The initiative culminates each year with public marches demonstrating support for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault — marches that continue to this day. The initiative grew from just 12 participating communities in 2009 to more than 170 in 2014.

Working with the Governor's public safety liaison, I developed a Choose Respect folder with comprehensive information on the initiative, including resources for victims and survivors, and advice on how to organize events and rallies. The folders were distributed to participating communities every year in advance of public rallies on the last Thursday in March.

On the right are two flyers I created to appear in schools across Alaska, inviting students to participate in a poster design contest highlighting the values of the initiative. The effort was a huge success with students from all corners of the state sending in creative and impactful pieces of art.

Below are examples of documents I formatted for presenations to the state Legislature detailing how state resources were being spent, and the progress being seen with the Choose Respect initiative.

Here are a few of the tent and thank you cards I produced to spread the word about the Choose Respect initiative, and thank volunteers and community hosts.

GOVERNOR OF ALASKA

After an extensive renovation in the Governor's Washington D.C. office, the staff were looking for a creative way to incorporate Alaska into their new space. I proposed a semi-opaque glazing showing the Alaska Range across all of the office's new interior 9-foot-tall floor-to-ceiling windows. Using Adobe Illustrator, I hand illustrated the three depths of silhouettes from several images of the Alaska Range that I pieced together into one seemless panorama across twelve panels. I wanted to give my coworkers a glimmer of home, and the sense that their desk sat right in the middle of Denali National Park.

PHOTOGRAPHY

From a young age, I have had a deep fascination with city skylines and scenic vistas. When I purchased my first beginner digital SLR camera in 2009, I finally had the tool to capture these amazing perspectives. As my family and friends will tell you, nothing quite gets me up at the crack of dawn like the opportunity to catch vibrant morning sunlight hitting an urban cityscape. I invite you to check out my captures from a majority of the cities I've photographed by scrolling or using the linked directory below. I hope to explore new continents and corners of the globe in the coming years. You can see many more of my shots on my Flickr page. I hope you enjoy experiencing these photos as much as I did capturing them.
